Goal Setting for the Mind, Body, and Soul

Everyone under the sun talks about goal setting. Like a New Year’s Resolution, these goals barely make it through a few weeks of trial and error. 
Why? Well, there’s a few reasons.
1. Accountability.
2. Lack of simplicity.
3. No balance.
Before we dive into these three, just a heads up that we’re talking about SMARTER goals here. 
You’ve probably heard the acronym before, but just a refresher. SMARTER goals are specific, measurable, action-based, realistic, time-based. Then, evaluate and re-do. 
Here’s an example from a friend of mine:
Scott said he wants to bring in 10,000/month on a consistent basis by December 31st. It’s specific, measurable, and realistic because Scott already has a few freelance clients and pulls in 5k/month, and it’s time-based. By December 31st, he’ll either be making 10k/month or he won’t be. He’ll then be able to evaluate and re-start a new income goal. 
Some people like the idea of throwing the realistic factor out the window and 10 times your goals. Why? Because even if you get half way to 10 times your goal, you’ve actually reach your initial goal and multiplied it by five. If that’s for you, then try that.
The only downside of that is you may never feel like you actually achieve a finish line which can feel not so good.
Okay, so the three things.
1. Accountability. You have to have it. You can have friend or loved one hold you accountability. Go ahead and give your friend $100. He gets to keep the money if you don’t follow through with a goal by the time you said you would get it done. 
Write the goal down and tape it to your closet so you see it every day.
Don’t feel like shelling out money? That’s what your mastermind group is for. Mastermind groups need to hold each other accountable. 
2. Keep it simple and under a year. Sure, we all can list off a ton of goals, but that can be too overwhelming. There’s little focus in this. 
Setting too many goals is like having too many choices when making a purchase. If you have more than three choices to choose from, it becomes too difficult to process and you end up not going through with any purchase in the first place. 
When I go to the store to buy ketchup for my sweet potato fries, I better only have 2-3 choices of ketchup. (organic, please 🙂
3. Balance
It’s time to think beyond your professional life since really…the type of work you’re doing since you’re reading this stems from the soul and goes far beyond filling the wallet. That said, I don’t expect anyone listening here to be able to clock out at 5pm. 
I fully expect you all to wake up some days at 3 am (or stay up till then) to work on your project. 
With that said, make sure the three goals you set end up feeding the mind, soul, and body. 
That could be to stay consistent with a meditation practice, reading a new book every two weeks, to drop a certain number of pounds, or eat cleaner.
After school, there’s no teacher checking in on you. No one is giving you a grade. That means you need to set your own accountability and you need to evaluate whether or not you’ve “passed”.
